About Sadie Ruben:

Born in Roskilde, Denmark 1965. Autodidact. Does art and have a little business where I sell flower girl dresses, headbands and jewelry too. Live and work in Copenhagen.

I started making clothes, and have been working a lot with especially making theater-costumes. But that was never really what I wanted to do, I was much more into colours, structure, weird materials, stuff like that…
Three different things put me on the track:
An old technique I was told about where you sew several layers of fabric together in a special pattern, and then cut them up and wash them, which makes them open up like flowers so that you can see the different layers, the different structures and colours. That really got me started.
Next thing was a Peter Greenaway exhibition in Malmö, Sweden in 2000: Flying Over water. I had to leave the exhibition several times when going through it because he made such a strong impression on me that I had to take time outside to breathe….
He taught me something, which has been very important to me: that simple materials are okay, it doesn´t have to be difficult, expensive, distinguished materials to bear a message and touch people.
And this whole thing underlining the exhibition: about human beings and their fragility, made a strong impression on me too.
The third thing was a music-cd, Joakim Thåströms cd from 1999: Det är ni som e dom konstiga, det är jag som e normal (You´re the one being weird, I´m the one being normal). It made, like Peter Greenaways exhibition, so strong an impression on me that I almost couldn´t take it. It had some amazing lyrics and filled my head with pictures, that I had to do something with… which ended up being: making sculptures.
I´m very fascinated over things being fragile, transparent, organic, soft, innocent. When I work I try to be faithfull to the picture that originally emerged in my head, but I´m also fascinated about the process of making it real, the whole work in finding out how to actually create it… it´s a both exciting, frustrating and – when I succed – amazing process…
